Hands Off: Navigating unwanted touch, consent and disability
Join us online for this year’s Oxford University Disability Lecture with Dr Amy Kavanagh
Dr Amy Kavanagh is an award winning activist, disability consultant and content creator. She uses social media to share her lived experience navigating the world as a blind Londoner alongside her Guide Dog. She is committed to celebrating disability, mobility aids and encouraging others to learn about the social model of disability.
Dr Kavanagh will explore the blurred lines between 'support', 'help' and 'consent' as experienced by disabled people. She started the #JustAskDontGrab campaign after being grabbed, pushed and even assaulted by members of the public on her daily commute. As the hashtag went viral, thousands of disabled people around the globe shared their stories of the desire for an independent life, but the price paid when you exist in a visibly disabled body. So where does our social urge to 'help' disabled people come from, and how do we offer assistance to those navigating space in different ways?
