Transgender Guidance

Please note that the University’s transgender guidance pages are currently under review. For more information, please see our update for Staff and Students.

The aims of the Transgender Policy and associated guidance are:

  • to set out a framework for how the University will provide support and understanding to staff and students who wish to take steps to change their gender identity, or have already done so;
  • to support members of the University in meeting the requirements of relevant legislation including the Equality Act 2010 and the Gender Recognition Act 2004;
  • to anticipate and respond positively to the needs of prospective, current and former students and staff in relation to their gender identity, providing a professional and inclusive environment so that all trans members of the University feel welcome, safe, valued and supported to achieve their potential and contribute as members of the University.

The guidance is informative, not prescriptive, and is intended to form the basis for sensitive support of transgender individuals.

It is recommended that colleges adopt this policy and guidance rather than developing their own. Support checklists for staff and students in the right-hand menu are intended to signal some of the main areas to be considered when an individual shares they are transitioning or exploring their gender identity.
